Meroitic Kingdom  (700 B.C – 300 A.D)

After the sacking of the Assyrians in 666 B.C, the Great African Kingdom retreated further south into what was then well-wooded country and established a new capital at Meroe, near today’s Shendi, there it survived virtually untroubled for centuries, while Egypt was overrun by the Persians, Macedonians & Romans.

Around 1000 B.C grew the independent kingdom of Cush, whose rulers conquered Egypt in the 9th century B.C, by the Great King Baankhi, making Napta his capital and one of the most important centers of the ancient world.

As early as 2300 B.C, the Pharahaonic Kingdom had begun to extend south, by 1000 B.C Nubia had become an Egyptian Colony and the empires prime source of gold, producing an estimated peak of 40,000 kg per year.

Also after the destruction of Meroe, a Christian Kingdom grew up in Nubia with its center in Dongola around 540 A.D.
